Q: Hey, what are the changes the ICCI are demanding from the government for the city of Coimbatore? I will be investing in property in Coimbatore soon, so needed to be aware of all these bits of information
Arey, not just the Coimbatore-Bangalore train, the ICCI has proposed several other demands to improve connectivity. They want the railway stations at North Coimbatore, Peelamedu and Podanur to have better infrastructure, so they are striving for their development. They are also demanding that the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam rail line be completely electrified and the Coimbatore airport be completely modernised to improve connectivity of both domestic and international flights. They also want better improved water resources with a number of tanks lakes and water reservoirs, since the water supply in this area is really poor.
Yes I also agree with you. The TUF will definitely help a lot of sectors in improving their business, opening up job opportunities in the city. Now that Coimbatore is one of the front runners in Indian motor, pump, foundry, and auto parts industry, I think the TUF will help all these industries to do even better. The other demands made by the ICCI that I heard was the overnight express train running between the cities of Coimbatore and Bangalore. Now if that wont improve connectivity with a major city like Bangalore, then I don’t know what will!
Yes, he’s right. In fact I’ve also heard that the ICCI are demanding a National Investment and Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) being set up in Coimbatore. As a potential investor this should be a big news for you, because if this motion is passed, Coimbatore is on the fast track to become the next best thing in real estate. Other job opportunities are going to open up as well, when the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) kicks in and boosts up the other engineering industries.
Basically the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is going for a Greater Coimbatore Development Authority, similar to the counterparts in Chennai and Hyderabad. They feel that since it is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu, and also a major economic hub of the country, it calls for a better development board, on par with some of the major cities of the country. The original master plan which was passed almost 20 years back, they have asked the government to revise it with provisions for proper city planning.
