Q: Hai I have to move to Vaduthala but I heard that the road is very narrow and many accidents are caused. Has the Kochi Municipal Corporation extended this road yet?
The corporation has promised that the work will be commissioned in 4 months time. But as of right now, there is complete disorder and chaos at Vaudathala crossing level because of the Pachalam road diversions due to bridge works. About 195 trains pass by here daily and it is extremely infuriating waiting for so long just to get to the other side. By the time a 2 lane bridge comes up at Vaduthala, bottlenecked portions of Goshree Mamangalam Road can be widened. But this 22 metre 4 lane project was put away by Kochi corporation as they didn't have enough funds for land acquisition. They had to resort to the 2 lane road. They should seriously get a move on and finish the project and bring some relief to the residents of Vaduthala.
The reason why this project is taking so long, is because as usual Kochi corporation doesn't have enough funds. They only have to pay for the land acquisition as the Vaduthala MLA has agreed to pay 5 lakhs for the project. But even then since they're in such a financial crunch, choking up 1 crore for the land acquisition and rehabilitaion will be difficult. So they're thinking about including this project as part of the Vaduthala railway Over Bridge project. I'm not sure what exactly they have in mind, but the mayor feels that since the 3 roads reaching Vaduthala enters into a bottleneck, shutting down the railway gate would result in traffic congestion making it difficult for commuters and pedestrians. :|
Such horrible things have happened because of the narrowness of these roads. A woman waiting at the Vaduthala bus stop was rammed by a bus onto the Don Bosco wall and killed because there was literally no space for anybody to move. A bride and bridegroom had to leave the car and run to the church as they were getting late for their marriage ceremony. The residents have faced so many hardships especially during the peak hours, which is from 8 to 10 am & 5 to 7 pm. The residents have suggested that 3 metres of Don Bosco be claimed so that the road can be widened. They also feel it isn't necessary to get an over bridge as it might make the road narrower. So hopefully the road is widened soon enough.
Even the area's MLA Hibi Eden, has allotted 5 lakhs for this road widening project. The thing is, that junction has so much traffic chaos every morning, and on top of that they go and put a level crossing in this area. It is such a tight situation that even ambulances here get trapped for very long time. It is also very dangerous because many accidents have been happening recently. It is important to remove that railway crossing in this area. And the road should definitely be widened and it is all thanks to the good work of the Ernakulum Residents Welfare Association that the project got its approval.
Yes this narrow road really was causing lot of problems to the residents. They filed a petition and submitted it to the Kochi corporation and finally got approval for road widening works from Kochi mayor. He's stated that this will benefit people coming from Vaduthala to other parts of the city. The road from Vaudthala Railway Gate to Panchalam Junction is going to be widened. This was decided last year but obviously executing the plan is still taking very long time.
