Waste Disposal Problem in North Paravur

Q: Hello. I have heard that there is lot of garbage that hasn't been disposed of in North Paravur. I might be moving there soon so I want to know what the civic authorities are doing about this? Any info would help. Thank you!

The new municipal council had distributed 300 pipe compost units and 41 biogas plants. Each beneficiary had paid a subsidised rate of 2,113, for a biogas plant that cost Rs. 6,500 under the Suchitwa Mission. But later, this amount was increased to 10,500 requiring more contribution of funds from ech beneficiary. because of this, many people were withdrawing from the account and the municipal council was left with the responsibility of paying these people their deposits back. I think people's attitude need to change with regard to waste disposal and only then can these sort of projects create an impact. Residents from other localities passing throught this area are also known to dumb waste in canals and water bodies. The municipality now has plans of cleaning the dumbyard and setting up a plastic shredder in the vicinity. There are also plans of ensuring litter free zones in the municipality and 1.65 crore has been sanctioned for the project.

Actually the present municipal council had abandoned the successful project to produce vermicompost from waste. The project which was implemented with the help of Kudumbashree workers who went to each household collecting waste and seggregating it and then finally dumping the waste in Vedimara dumping ground has been turned down by the currnt municipal council. Such a pity because this 5.5 crore project funded by Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme of Small and Medium Towns was inspirational to other muncipalities. And now, nobody is collecting the waste from households and as a result, open dumping is taking place where residents throw all their garbage on the streets. This is really aggravating the situation. Even the autos that were bought for collecting this waste were just lying idle outside the municipal office.

Atleast North Paravur has a private agency buying all the plastic waste at the cost of Rs 1 per kg. Soon there's also going to be a plastic shredding unit installed here just like the one in Thrikkakara installed by the municipality. Despite the North Paravur municipality being successful, still nothing is being done about the waste dumping. The waste dumping yard in the centre of the locality, the pile of PVC pipelines and 5 unused rickshaws are signs that show the carelessness of the waste disposal system in North Paravur. Among this, the poor quality PVC pipes were in the limelight as the attempt of launching household pipe composting techniques was a fail.

Hey yeah Kochi has been facing a lot of problems related to waste disposal especially plastic waste in most of its 11 districts. The Public Works Departments plans of shredding plastic waste and relaying roads with it has not been very successful because Kochi lacks scientific waste collection techniques and because of this there is a rising mountains of plastic waste all over the streets. Only Tripunithura and Thrikkakara have some system in place but even these localities are finding plastic waste disposal to be a big pain.
