Q: Im considering an investment in Kochi real estate. What is the latest news on the waste disposal and management system here? Anything that might prove to be influential for my investment?
I think the district collector has already conducted discussions with civic bodies and residents' associations, following which they want to conduct a seminar for all stakeholders, including health department officials, students and teachers from schools in the district to try to find solutions to their waste disposal problems
However, local bodies will have to depend mainly on their plan funds to set up plants. The support of local self-government department is also going to be taken. I've heard that biogas plants are going to be set up in all government schools.
There is a waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram in Kochi. The other corporations around Kochi have been asked you to treat their waste over here, instead of hiring some private company for the disposal. Plan is also there to rope in the Suchitwa mission to help improve the waste management system.
Ok otherwise they are also going to be creating awareness on segregating waste through residents' associations. Other than that the district administration is planning to look into using corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds from public sector undertakings to provide financial assistance for local bodies to set up waste treatment plants.
The condition at present is not so good. Just Kochi corporation has its own solid waste treatment plant. All the other civic bodies in the district, including municipalities and panchayats, depend on private companies, who just dump all this waste secluded places or some canal.
Well I dont know if it will affect real estate or not, but from now on the district administration will join hands with residents' associations to identify waste disposal related issues in each area and recommend possible solutions. They are planning to all convene in a meeting where these issues will be addressed
