Q: Looking to invest in Kochi, the water supply seems to be a problems here. But the Maradu water plant seems to be an upcoming blessing. When is it going to finally supply water? I want to time my investment accordingly.
Yes actually it started all the way back in 2007. This was one of the JnNURM projects. But the residents in the nearby Piravam area were protesting against all the road digging for the pipe laying, so it all got delayed. There was also a delay in getting the permission from the NHAI to cut the road
I know that this is a rs 250cr project, and the whole plant will actually have the capacity of providing 100 million lits of water every day. This project started long back, as far as i remember, but it got delayed due to some protests and other issues.
Yes you're right. All that is left to be done now is the laying of pipes through the Aroor Railway cross to provide water to the Aroor and Chellanam reservoirs. They are just awaiting the sanction for laying the pipelines from the concerned authorities.
For Kochi city and neighbouring municipalities, they are planning to supply drinking water through tanker lorries from the plant. Every day, water will be supplied to 100 tankers from the plant to ensure that only clean water is supplied through the tanker lorries
Basically all that's needed right now is the clearance from the electrical inspectorate for the 1,000 KWA electricity connection that this plant needs required. Once the necessary clearance is obtained, the pumping to Maradu and Kumbalam areas can begin.
Construction is completed almost. The work of the pump house, pump sets, transformers, the pumping line to draw water, gravity mains and the treatment facility is done. Almost 90% the work of installing the pumping mains to various reservoirs is also over.
I think the water plant will be operational from early next year. The construction of this water treatment plant is almost drawing to an end, and few days ago the urban affairs minister only announced that the project will be providing water and helping out the water shortage scene in Kochi pretty soon.
Yes the date is actually January 2015. This whole project will provide an extra 25 million litres of water daily to the city of Kochi. In fact the nearby municipalities of Maradu, Kumbalam, Kumbalangi and Chellanam will also benefit once this water treatment plant starts functioning.
