Hi Priya,
To make some new changes in city infrastructures & to provide best assistance to physically handicapped people , Chennai corporation has taken this step. Chennai Corporation will direct private buildings without disabled-friendly infrastructure to make necessary modifications. Corporation focus will mostly be on private buildings that are used as public premises. Until now, the civic body had been taking measures to regulate only public buildings.

Officials in all the 15 zones have been instructed to conduct a ward-level survey to identify private buildings frequented by persons with disability and serve notices to those without suitable infrastructure. Corporation officials will survey all buildings and also offer to set up the necessary infrastructure. The cost can be recovered later.

Owners of buildings that fail to commission disabled-friendly facilities will be penalized. More than 800 Corporation-owned buildings are disabled friendly. Most of schools are provided with ramps fitted during election time. Existing public toilets are not disabled friendly and corporation plan to retrofit them with railings.

@ Priya,

Another strong initiatives taken by Chennai Corporation is to clear the foot path from vehicle crowd. Officials have also been instructed to cancel licenses of commercial establishments that allow vehicles to be parked on footpaths, obstructing easy movement of disabled persons. The civic body will also map the deficiencies in infrastructure required for persons with disability.

Thousands of commercial buildings in the city that houses nearly five lakh commercial properties are likely to get facilities for persons with disability by year-end. A decision on regulation of housing complexes will be taken based on requests from residents. The city has 17 lakh properties and 11 lakh property tax assesses.

@ Priya,
This step taken by Chennai Corporation is a very helpful & indeed necessary. And people are very happy. But people are also worried about how effective this decision will be ? A 2013 government order had directed public buildings in all municipalities to be made accessible in three months, but it wasn’t followed through.
