latest updates on metro land acquisition in Kochi in 2015

Q: Hey, i heard from a friend who is closely working on the metro project that the land acquisition issue has gained some traction. Can someone please give me some details regarding the same?

Let me tell you that acquisition of around an acre’s land from a tyre manufacturer at Kalamassery for metro station’s parking space and other amenities is entangled in a court case.

Yes, once this is done, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation are expected to widen Vyttila-Pettah Road into four lane, for extending the viaduct up to Pettah.

A week ago, the District Administration had issued notice to the two firms to surrender land before March 18. But the firms refused to pay heed. Owners of small, medium and big plots of land handed over their lands in 2013 and 2014 itself.

Yeah, there will be no more negotiations on free surrender either since the land at Edappally is crucial for the metro station’s landing, parking space and to construct a few metro utilities.

Did you know that the MoU route to take over the textile firm’s land free of cost after giving it some concessions on usage of space beneath the via duct for advertisements was given up following repeated attempts to alter terms and conditions.

I wanted to tell you that five pillars are expected to come up on land owned by the textile firm. Metro officials said the pillars and viaduct above could be readied by October (the revised deadline for metro’s civil works) only if land was made available this month.

The two firms have not so far replied to the warning notice issued a week ago by the District Collector. The next step is to issue a last and final notice demanding that they vacate the land in 48 hours.

According to District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam told The Hindu that the two plots would be acquired in five day’s time, since owners were given over two years to surrender their land, which is crucial for constructing the metro’s viaduct

Well, the revised time limit for surrendering lands for Kochi Metro viaduct expired last week and, the District Administration is learnt to have readied a game plan to take over 32 cents of land from a textile showroom on northern end of MG Road and 1.09 acres from a jewellery’s partners in Edappally by early next week.
