12 smart cities and coastal eco zones will come up under the ambitious Sagarmala project
Q: AS per Union Minister Nitin Gadkari at least 12 smart cities and several coastal economic zones will come up under the ambitious Sagarmala project which will lift India's GDP growth by 2%.
Yes, to get appropriate result, govt. should support those cities or state first. Government grants will be leveraged to attract funding from internal and external sources but unless there is a possible business model or guarantee from the center, this would not be easy.
Also, the track record of Public Private Partnership projects is at best mixed and when there would be multiple parties associated like the center, states, local bodies and private entities, the task would be even more challenging.
Hi all!!! We all know that the government has recently identified 98 cities for the Smart City Project. And fund for 20 cities have been distributed. But funding for these projects and its execution will be a major challenge for companies. There is no doubt that this mission is expected to improve the quality of life for citizens of these cities. For government, the focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at intensive areas and create a exemplary model. if you are agree with my view point then give ur valuable input
Yes, it would be better if the Govt's focus on smaller number of cities first and then developing them as model for others going forward. Present Govt. has already started so many programme in 2015. Now it is time to complete those project in proper manner.
Under this mission, center will give financial support to the limit of Rs 48000 crore over 5 yrs, which is on an average Rs 1000 crore per city per year. And an equal amount, on a matching basis, will have to be contributed by the state and urban local bodies if required.
Right Abhi!!!! All those launched programmes need to be implemented successfully ......."Thoda Khaye But Achcha Khaye" .....Govt. should think over this policy first....
If we look at the list of cities which have been selected as smart city, many of them would already have annual municipal budgets running into multiple times of this figure. On the other hand, there are few states which have shown doubt for implementing the scheme and if there is not enough support from them in terms of funding and administrative help, it would be difficult to take this scheme to its reasonable result.
Hi folks, It is came to know that Maharashtra government is thinking over its own "Smart City" project with an aim to provide development opportunities to cities that have not been selected by the Centre under its ambitious programme.
As per the State Urban Development Department, the project is at a beginning stage for now and nothing has been finalized on paper as yet. However, the Chief Minister has in-principle and given his approval to go ahead.
Yes Niyati, Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nagpur and Aurangabad are among 10 cities selected from the state for the Centre's "Smart City" project. State had chosen 33 cities for the Smart City project. However, according to limitation of 10 cities, state had to drop other cities. The preparation of these cities was admirable and hence, the state government has decided to introduce its own "smart city" project so that they can change the face of these cities.
Hmm,,,,, A decision on allotment of funds to develop these as smart cities under the state government's project will be taken soon and it will later be placed before the Cabinet for its approval.
The Centre, under its flagship programme, will provide Rs 100 crores to each of the 10 cities selected by it so that they can prepare a plan of their own. These cities will then consult NGOs and citizens before finalizing the plan of their smart city.
Well James,
The Panel will also analyze financing options available for the funding of projects, the probability of public-private partnership in project financing/construction/ operation. A National Sagarmala Apex Committee (NSAC) is imagined for overall policy suggestions and high level sychronisation for the project which will be chaired by Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari. This committee, while providing policy direction and suggestions for the initiative's execution, will approve the entire NPP and review the progress of implementation of these plans.
Hi Rajat,
For strengthening port and evacuation infrastructure, Sagarmala project aims at simplifying procedures used at ports for cargo movement and promotes usage of electronic channels for information exchange leading to efficient, hassle-free and seamless cargo movement.
While preparing the NPP, Industrial Clusters, synergy and integration with planned industrial corridors, National Highway Development Programme, dedicated freight corridors, and SEZs would be ensured
Hi Rajat, Govt. will be constituted a Sagarmala Coordination and Steering Committee (SCSC) under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary with Secretaries of the Ministries of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Tourism, Defence, Home Affairs, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Departments of Revenue, Expenditure, Industrial Policy and Promotion, Chairman, Railway Board and CEO, NITI Aayog as members.
The benefit of this project is that it will boost export-import as well as domestic trade. At present Indian ports handle more than 90% of India's total EXIM trade volume but the current proportion of merchandise trade in GDP is only 42% whereas in Germany and European Union, it is 75%and 70% respectively.
Keeping in mind the end goal to have successful component at the state level for organizing and encouraging related tasks, the state governments will be asked to set up State Sagarmala Committee to be headed by Chief Minister/Minister in Charge of Ports, along-with individuals from significant Departments and organizations.
Right Niyati, Even the detailed Master Plans will be prepared for identified Coastal Economic Zones leading to identification of projects and preparation of their detailed project reports.
Do you know that that each of the 12 smart cities will be built at a cost of Rs 50000 crore. Funds required in 2015-16 for implementation of projects in the initial phase of Sagarmala is placed at Rs 692 crore.
Hi Rehan, As we all know that Sagarmala project which is a priority project for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it has been designed in a manner that it will see at least 12 smart cities at India's major ports besides special economic zones. Even cabinet gave nod to the project aiming at port-led development in coastal states.
I think our Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari is right. This task alone will help India's GDP by 2%. An allotment of Rs 4000 crore has been made for SEZ at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which is one of 12 major ports in India, under the Sagarmala project, while coastal economic zone is in the offing at Kandla port which has 2 lakh acres of land in its ownership.
