Maharashtra Govt. to use no-development defence zones for affordable housing in Mumbai
Q: The state govt. is considering opening up land parcels under the no-development zones as well as plots belonging to Indian defence personnel in an effort to build affordable houses in Mumbai.
But one thing govt has to keep in mind that all No Development Defence Zones"are mostly forest lands. And if those are used for housing, then we will loose the green cover on earth. I think Maharashtra Govt. should look into this matter before taking any such decision.
For this purpose, they can use the defence land that has been encroached upon by slum dwellers. In exchange of this, they will allot them land in other parts of Maharashtra.
Hi Pranab, You forgot to mention that Prakash Mehta addressed realty developers, who drew his attention to high taxes and development collections, to develop more affordable housing projects in the city. As per the Maharashtra Govt., they need 11 lakh affordable houses in Mumbai and like to get builders' support on this.
Right Niyati, They need these houses within Mumbai not in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. They will take care for MMR for affordable housing. Now, the developers will be able to build affordable houses in MMMR that includes areas such as extended suburbs Vasai, Virar, Badlapur, Ambarnath. He expect commitment within a month from developers to build affordable houses in Mumbai.
Yes, Maharashtra Government has given the clear cut instruction to all departments. The blueprint for affordable housing in Mumbai will be ready soon, and if needed, they will even look at the salt pan land, defence land, airports authority and Bombay Port Trust for these projects.
According to Prakash Mehta, minister of housing, labour & mines, Maharashtra government has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Defence that will allow land under its control in Mumbai to be used for mass housing.
A land spread of over around 350 acres, mainly on the eastern coast, under Bombay Port Trust's control, can also be used for mass housing projects.
