Virugambakkam is a residential neighborhood situated in the western parts of Chennai. It is an important residential locality famous for residences of film artists. This locality has some of Chennai’s best film studios. Earlier this residential colonies was a village covered with paddy fields, mango orchards, and casuarina trees. The locality has brought under the purview of Greater Chennai Corporation. As a result, lots of infrastructure projects have been planned. The civic amenities have also improved. This locality is sharing its boundaries with Saligramam, Koyambedu, MMDA Colony, Mogappair, Vanagaram, Valasaravakkam, Maduravoyal, Ayyapakkam, Anna Nagar, T Nagar, Alwartirunagar, Porur, Vadapalani, Kodambakkam among others. Lambert Nagar, Ayyavupuram, Ganpat Raj Nagar, Chinmaya Nagar, Shanmuga Nagar, AVM Colony, Elango Nagar, Devraj Nagar are some of the largest colonies comes within Virugambakkam. The locality is bound by Saligramam in the east, Koyambedu to the north and Vanagaram to the west, and Ramapuram to the south. Natural gas was discovered near Virugambakkam in 1966. To date, Virugambakkam is the only known source of natural gas in Chennai city apart from Avadi. The Virugambakkam Canal separates Virugambakkam from suburbs such as Koyambedu, which lie towards the interior. The canal runs for about 6   through the suburbs of Choolaimedu, Arumbakkam, and Vadapalani before entering Virugambakkam. This locality has extended for about 2 kilometers from Avichi Higher Sec. School in Arcot Road to Valasarawakkam. Famous localities of this place include Madhuban, Janaki Enclave, Valasaravakkam, State bank Colony and Baskar colony.
