The present scenario says that there are no policies laid out for the proper disposal of e-wastes. This was told by Kochi Corporation’s town planning committee chairman K J Sohan. The current condition is that, the collection, segregation, dismantling, and recycling of electronic wastes are carried out largely by unorganised sectors. They collect various e-wastes like RAM chips, CPUs, monitors, and keyboards from scratch and sell them to small time deals and scratch collectors. The buyers are all come from various cities like Coimbatore, Mumbai, and Delhi.
According to rough estimates, around 14000 tons of e-waste is accumulated in a single month. Out of this large amount, only 120 tons are processed properly. The whole of Kerala has only one center where you can process e-waste. This canter is situated in Kanjikode, Palakkad, and it is recognised by both state and central pollution control board. So, with such a lack of facility for a whole state, Kochi e-waste disposal state is not so bright at the current moment. But Kochi is slowly turning into eco-friendly in lot of their aspects and so, you can expect proper e-waste disposals soon.
Hey, last month I vacated my house and I had a lot of e-wastes to dump, like my old keyboard, monitor, some unused calculators, batteries, and some more electronic items. But I can’t find any special segregation to dump them, and so I dumped them along with my normal garbage. Although I know this is not the way to go about it, I had not many options as Kochi corporation has not issued any guidelines or directions on how and where to dispose e-wastes.
