Damaged Trichy Road

Q: I've heard that the Trichy roads are inefficient and gets affected easily by rains. Has this civic issue been rectified? Has there been any improvement in development of the road?

Yeah, people are still finding it extremely difficult to even walk on the streets especially in areas like R.K. Layout, Amman Koil Street, Vinayagar Koil Street, Parthasarathy Street, Shastri Street, Ganga Street, Dr. Bhabha Street. Basically, the drainage work that started in Venkitapuram and other areas of the neighbourhood has not been completed efficiently. This is really not fair on the part of Coimbatore Corporation and if they want to provide us with civic facilities like a proper drainage system then it should not be with the cost and compromise of other facilities as basic as roads! School children need to be picked up from new bus stops by parents, as the buses and vans refuse to come into the narrow lanes where the roads are very bad. Coimbatore in general needs a complete makeover, infrastructure wise.

That is truly unfortunate and I feel your pain. No seriously! I don't understand why repair work can't be carried out when it has to be, and when it is of immediate urgency. I definitely would categorize the bad Trichy road to be of utmost importance to fix. Last year, there was drainage work that had to happen in the area, so as a result a number of potholes and broken roads came to form. After the work was done, the authroties gave the go ahead to the highway department to get the roads fixed but did the work happen on time? Well obviously not. Then again there were plans to start work but then there was a leak in the Siruvani pipeline which further delayed the work. And as of now, the road is temporarily fixed with gravel but I doubt it does a lot to help.

So I vividly remember standing by the pan shop on Pankaja Mill Road Junction on Trichy Road this one rainy Sunday afternoon. Little did I know that I was asking for trouble. I'll bet that's what was on everybody elses mind who were taking shelter under the bus stop but as we were all cramped up together, there was barely space to breathe (or so it felt like). So the reason we were doing this wasn't because we were enjoying ourselves, but we sort of had to as the road is that narrow and if we stood on the road, we would have had to stand on a car or bike. Literally! There was no space to go anywhere. I wish that was the worst part. Just as I was trying to get on the bus that took forever to show up, me and a bunch of other innocent fellow beings like myself got splashed by dirty muddy murky rain water. This was just before work by the way, did I mention that?
