Q: I've been meaning to move to Kovai Pudur for a while now but I am apprehensive of the water shortage in the area. Is this still a major civic problem in the locality?
I remember Kovaipudur when I had initially moved there about 30 years ago. Kovaipudur recently turned 50 by the way :) It is a very nice locality and most of the residents living here, have been living here for a very long time now. We are all very happy with the locality, the infrastructure, the proximity to other places. I remember water supply never being a problem. If you dug the earth 10 years ago, you would have easily found water about 10 feet deep. But today, you only find water if you dig for more than 1000 feet! The place expanded very fast and the authorities did little or nothing to expand on the civic ammenities. Because of this there is high demand but less supply. I would still suggest this locality if you want to live here because despite all this, it has great potential!
Some people have decided to make a business out of this issue and this actually helped the residents. There was this one guy who would wake up early every morning and fill water from the Siruvani tap so that he could supply to the residents of kovaipudur all day long till 11 pm. He charged 70 bucks for one can having 35 litres of water, a little extra for service charge. But no one ever complained, as all the residents found that this was very convenient for them. If the Siruvani tap was dry, he would go to the Parambikulam-Aliyar project where he would draw more water. A lot of people have started to do this and this business in reality is worth 10 crore!
Agreed! An open forum of officials, elected representatives and residents can help thrash out solutions to tackle this issue. Water problem can get very bad in kovapudur and other parts of Coimbatore like Vadavalli and Ramanathapuram. The bore wells have got very polluted before and packaged water is super expensive plus the public taps for water are really far away. This is quite sad because Kovaipudur is actually a really nice locality! This is Coimbatore's new satellite town and more importance must be paid to solve such civic issues.
Yes actually the thing is, every summer the situation is very bad. During other seasons, water quantity is actually in surplus. It is the fault of the civic authorities for not constructing more water bodies when they had the chance. Because of this, a lot of people have lesser quantities of water during the season when they need it the most. Drastic action should be taken against those still using motor pumps. Even now, if water is supplied on alternative days and in lesser quantity instead of supply every 4 days, this will seriously solve the water shortage issue these residents face!
