Q: Are the authorities at all concerned about these open wells in Kakkanad? Is something being done about them or what? I’m sick of these unhygienic surroundings here.
Did you guys know that these wells are the reason behind the increasing cases of fever and leptospirosis in the locality of Kakkanad? What worries me is that there are people who actually depend on underground water for their daily needs, and this same water is contaminated beyond measure, because of unhealthy practices. As to your question, no I don’t think anybody is doing anything about this problem. The DMO has clearly stated that they don’t have any projects planned to take care of this problem. Even the Health Standing committee has washed their hands off of it.
Not only that, the septic tanks in some of the local apartment buildings tend to overflow, and then this in turns flows into these wells, because they don’t have such high walls, they are just like circular holes in the ground. Actually the locality needs an urgent sewage treatment plant. From what I think is that we cannot really discount all these wells. If we improve the condition of all these wells throughout the locality at least, then it will be a big help to the city’s water shortage problem.
Yes, as far as I know the authorities are not showing any initiative about dealing with this hazard. There are about 10 of these wells just in Kakkanad only, and even more in other parts of Kochi. What is happening is that the dirty water is seeping through and contaminating the underwater water supply. A lot of people here in Kakkanad depend on underground borewells, this contamination is taking a toll on the overall health of the residents of Kakkanad.
Arey not just insects, these wells are full of garbage from homes, faecal matter etc. Its a real threat to the hygiene of the locality. The DMRC has even conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment of the effects of these wells and found them to be extremely harmful, by spreading diseases and being a breeding ground of mosquitoes. They are also contributing a big deal to the overall pollution of this locality. I think the corporation should do something about this.
Well this unhygienic feature about Kochi has already come to the notice of the authorities long back, say 8 years ago. But I’m not aware of any steps being taken to counter this nuisance actually. This is a major problem, not just in Kakkanad, but also in other parts of Kochi. With the monsoons, the situation becomes even more hazardous. The water fills up, and its a breeding ground for diseases.
