Well the original ‘Semmozhi Poonga’ was planned with a land transfer of 45.25 acres. Seeing what little progress that one made, the corporation decided to take a portion of that land and turn it into a sports complex complete with swimming pool and a stadium. The funds allocated for this is Rs 3.85 crores. There is going to be enough scope for development too. I think this will help in the capital appreciation of nearby real estate. What do you guys think?
Did you know that this is not the first time that the corporation had planned to build a sports arena in Coimbatore? Yeah there were plans previously to build one within the prison grounds itself. It was during the DMK regime. But I think the project got scrapped once the government changed hands in 2011. I’m really looking forward to the swimming pool specially, I live close to this place, and this will mean that my children will be able to enjoy the benefits.
Hey, the land area is actually an exact of 5.63 acres. And also it is not within the prison complex, but near it. Once the sports complex is built it will be open to all civilians, not prison inmates. Another thing that is being expected from the sports development authority is the construction of a stadium and a pool within these grounds. Good news is that there is clause that the students from city corporation schools will get a priority to use the facilities offered by this sports complex.
What are you saying! The city already has a number of bus stands. But yeah, we need one on the outskirts to improve the traffic condition within Coimbatore. I’ve heard about the new upcoming bus stand. Its in Vellalore, isn’t it? And like you said, its basically to hold off the heavy inflow of traffic. I think previously there was a plan to build the new bus stand on the Coimbatore-Kochi Bypass Road, because the Chettipalayam Road would then lead up to the bus stand, and it is wide enough to take all the traffic. But then they decided to go with Vellalore instead. I’m also hearing that the corporation is also going to shift the Lorry Pettai from Ukkadam to Vellalore.
Yeah you have heard right. What you might not know is that this sports complex is actually being built in the central prison complex. The corporation wants to start the state sports development authority and this is the first step towards achieving that. AS of now the initial lease period is going to be 10 years, and the rate is Rs 10,000 per acre. The total land being allotted is around 6 acres, so that’s a total of roughly Rs 60,000 per year.
