Q: Hey what is the current news on constructing the bridge at Peelamedu? Won't this really help ease the heavy traffic situation in the area? Have the civic authorities atleast started works on it? I might be moving here soon, so I really need to know. Any info would help. Thanks!
Basically, the Thaneerpandal road rail overbridge was sanctioned around 2008-2009, and the Peelamedu – Cheran Maanagar Road rail overbridge was sanctioned sometime between 2010 and 2011. In fact, these two actually form part of the level crossing in Coimbatore North Tirupur section. These two sanctions that were supposed to be completed sometime between 3 years ago to now, still haven't been completed and if they were, they were expected to expected to turn Coimbatore and Tirupur districts into level crossing-free districts. Once these sanctioned projects are taken up sincerely by the authorities, given priority and focus, only then can development take place and we can rid Coimbatore of all the traffic obstacles.
Hey I don't know if you remember, but the authorities did provide an alternative route from Ellai Thottam road to Vilankurichi road sometime in September last year. This route was provided on the basis that road works were going to begin, but there was no sign of it. And now on this alternative route, traffic has severely increased because residents from Vilankurichi, Gandhimanagar and Kalapatti all use this road. I think the authorities are looking at 3900 metres of land for acquisition although they are still facing some issues with this, and that's a major reason for the delay. The length of the road either side of the bridge is expected to be 850 m. Let's see if this bridge will ever become a reality.
Yeah the GRT School and the Vijaykumar Ginning Factory are also both situated on the road and these structures might need to be shifted as a result of this project. The rail over bridge is said to be put in Cheran Maa Nagar in Peelamedu and about 50,000 residents living in Cheran Maa Nagar, Vilankurichi and Thaneerpandal are supposed to benefit from this bridge. They really will because traffic congestion in this locality will tremendously decrease as a result of this bridge. There are about 30 to 35 colonies here and all the residents have complained about this project delay because it's going to be unnecessary time wasting for them and they'd have to spend extra on fuel.
Really doesn't seem like the project is going to start soon, especially since the district administration hasn't even come up with an alternative route because of project works. The project was supposed to start sometime on Feb 17th 2012 and completed 8 months from that time. But it obviously didn't happen and again Coimbatore is facing project work delays. The project involved road widening on either side to 8 feet but now that also has been reduced to 6 feet because of some really influential residents living on Vilankurichi Road.
This project was supposed to happen ages ago but still hasn't much to the annoyance of the Peelamedu Consumer Voice. This is a representation of the residents of the area and the rail over bridge they have been demanding for more than 3 years now still has not been completed. I'm not sure if the work has even started. But the plan was for NABARD to contribute funds worth Rs 30.5 crore but since NABARD has also allocated funds for other projects, especially the one in SInganallur, this project is being ignored.
