Fact is that the project needs more land at Srirangapatna. So now the deputy commissioners have been instructed to finish the land acquisition process asap, so that the whole thing can be done by March 2015. Actually the problem is that the new Land Acquisition Act is causing some delays in the whole land acquisition process. Railway minister suggested that the commissioner should buy the land and hand it over to the railways.
I think one of the main reasons behind the delay of this project was because this huge 18th century monument was in the way blocking the path of construction. Yeah, it was a magazine that was used to store guns and all back then, and they had to shift the whole things. Also funds were a big problem. But I think all that has been cleared out now, and it should be smooth sailing from now on.
I came to know of some interesting news about this project actually. I heard that the railway minister is actually considering expediting the work so that the construction is completed as soon as possible. At the moment only 91km of the 140km track has been completed, and its not impressive because the works have been going on since 2007. Ive heard that the minister had met up with the railway officials and got a full account of what was causing the delay.
