News of the Pachalam ROB in Kochi

Q: What is the condition of the Pachalam ROB? Have the controversies died down over there? I had thought of buying a house in this vicinity, but now im rethinking my decision because of these issues.

The Janakeeya Samara Samiti, which is heading these protests, have warned of more protests if the authorities attempted to resume the work. They dont want the work to resume at any cost and are ready to face any consequences, even jail time.

The district administration has assured the protesters that it will expedite payment of compensation to the evictees and that the land of Kattungal temple will not be used for the project. They, however, are insisting on stopping the work before further discussions, but the administration is strictly against that.

This project had come to a standstill two months ago. The decision to restart the project was taken at a high level meeting convened by the District Collector on Monday. The meeting also decided to seek the help of the police force, if necessary, to provide security to the workers

Well now its a High Court order to continue work here, so whatever protests or disruption happens here, the police will get involved in providing necessary security cover to the construction site and also for the workers. As of now the work has resumed and zero-tolerance attitude has been adopted. Those protestors had even been taken into custody that day!

Yes, I know, this entire group of people staged a protest march at the construction site. The district collector even tried reasoning with them, but it was of no use. I even heard that police forces had to be deployed. Isnt this regarding the land of the Kattunfal temple?

Well the construction works of this ROB was stopped some time ago because of some controversy. But the authorities tried to start up the construction again few days ago, only to be met with more resistence from the protestors

Yes, the police did come. They removed these protestors by force, and only then the works for the eastern part of the ROB could be started. The whole problem happened because of land acquisition for the ROB. Some residents of this area had been evicted following land acquisition protocols, but they werent happy with the situation, hence the protests. Also the temple lands being used for construction struck a nerve with many
