Q: Hi, I am David from Kochi. I am really not satisfied with the present condition of the canals and the sewage treatment in Kochi city. Just wanted to know if there is any plans to renovate these old canals and all here. Someone plz give some info on this?
I think the project is getting loans from the German Development Bank, and there I got a hint that they will almost drop this project saying that it is not feasible to make all the canals navigable. The reason for dropping the project is the huge land acquisition cost.
Yeah.. I have also heard about this move by the Cochin Corporation. As per their plan, I think that the Thevara-Perandoor Canal, Karanakkodam Canal, Edappally Canal, Changadam Pokku Canal, Pandarachal, Pashnithodu and Pallichal Canal will be made into navigable canals for transportational purposes.
The ministers have actually assured the funds for the purpose of this issue related to the remodelling of the canals in the city. Earlier on, the corporation had also made some plans to make the canal navigable by cleaning them. The plan was to add the canal to the existing water network, this would improve the goods transport also.
The Detailed Project Report on this remodelling work is on the progress. This DPR will mainly focus on the purification of water and the construction of side walls on both the sides of the canal. During the inauguration of the GCDA bridge over the canal only, there were some discussion about the need to clean the Perandoor canal. This is also included in the DPR.
Hey, yes, the Thevara Perandoor canal, no? According to some information that I got, some of the major canals including the Thevara Perandoor Canal, Karanakkodam Canal, Manthra Canal, Pandarachal and Pallichal will be renovated so as to improve the sewage network of the city.
Hey David, yes, the condition of the canals in the city has been pathetic. But, now, I think that the corporation has come up with some development projects for the remodelling of Canals in Kochi. The project will be undertaken by the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project or the KSUDP.
