When I enquired about this, I got to know that the expert team from DGCA visited the airport in the second week of February, 2015, carried out a thorough inspection of the highway stretch, airport and runway alignment and have taken the feasibility report to be submitted to their higher authorities.
I think that the proposal to align the extended runway would cut across NH 212, connecting Mysuru with Nanjangud and Gundlupet which resulted in the runway extension proposal has been held up. The other alternative was to divert the highway which required nearly 180 acres of land to be acquired.
Hmm..but the work has not yet started near to the airport because as the final decision on whether to divert and realign the highway or to give clearance for an underpass is pending.
Exactly, what led to the immediate need to take a decision on the underpass was triggered by the ongoing widening of NH-212 to a six-lane road. I think that the work has commenced on various different routes.
Actually, as far as I know, the suggession for an underpass was given by the Institution of Engineers-India (IEI), Mysuru, almost two years ago that a 1,100-m long subway with a barrel width of 50 m could be constructed to facilitate a four-lane road at a cost of Rs. 60 crore.
Hey, I think that the DGCA is likely to take a final call on the proposed underpass that will run below the runway for Mysuru airport which was mooted to remove the need for acquiring land for diverting National Highway 212.
