Vallarpadam Container Terminal Road has become an accident prone zone
Q: Hello, ever since the Terminal road has been opened for public usage, I heard that accident are happening a lot. What has happened? What has made this road so dangerous.?
I just saw a accident around 10:08pm. And the driver of the bike ran off. The person sitting behind him is deformed after being dragged by a container lorry. From what i heard the biker ran into a car they fell, back passenger got hit by a container lorry. Lorry didnt stop he pulled him and dragged to a distance. The driver of the bike talked to the people around and he just ran off. I tried calling 0484100 they said unable to contact. A person among the people said they have contacted.
Besides, there are allegations that the 17.2 km-long road, which often wears a deserted look, has also turned out to be a haven for criminal activities, including murders and ganja trade. This should be taken care of too.
Exactly, At present on an average, over 600 container carriers operate on a daily basis and the Port authorities have identified an area of 5.5 acres to accommodate these vehicles. But, it is stuck in red tape. This must be taken care of real soon.
You know what I think, the port authorities must work on providing a proper parking facility for all of the trucks that operate from around here. IF that is not done, then these accidents keep happening.
Right. This road is not at all fit for the general public to use. I mean 15 minutes is definitely worth if if it can save your life. Travelling through this road is a definite chance that you are treading in dangerous territory for the commuters.
Yes. The huge trucks with all the container know that they have a speed limit and they abide by that, but the smaller vehicles wont. Also the roads cannot have that many speed breakers as this could be problematic for the trucks. This is where the problem is.
Actually, this issue can be avoided if the construction of the roads are completed. Again, that works if the speeding vehicles are curbed. But I will tell you what allowing public vehicles to go through here was a really bad idea.
The police too actually patrol the areas here during the late hours of every night, so that they can stop such incidents from happening. Thay have gone a step further and have banned parking in the stretch of the road.
The worst part here is the traffic departments have asked the terminal authority to put up a couple of traffic signals in the area to stop this from happening. But the teminal authority have not responded to this. This is kinda bad.
In the Traffic East's jurisdiction atleast 5 accidents are being reported every month. This is because there is no traffic lights, and also that all the containers park in the roads illegally which has become a major concern for the police.
In the year 2013, just 5 accidents were reported which were all serious. But the number slowly keeps rising. But now, this year. In the first two months alone 5 seious accidents have been reported of which 2 of them ended in death.
In 2014, as many as 20 accidents occurred on the road stretching from Kalamassery to Bolgatty Island. Of these, 17 were seriously injured, either seriously handicapped or in a state of coma. Not just that, there were a total of two deaths.
Look, if the data available with the Traffic West Police is any proper indication, the number of accidents that occur on this container stretch road is on a serious rise. Shockingly, a major chunk of the victims were grievously injured.
At present, the road is still under maintenance and according to the City Traffic Police, it is under two jurisdictions, Traffic West and Traffic East. ANd despite that nothing is being possible for them. I mean, to stop the accidents from happening.
The road that was inaugurated five years ago was initially opened only for container vehicles proceeding to the terminal, but the authorities later permitted public vehicles as it would reduce the travelling time by atleast 20 minutes with a value addition of hassle-free traffic.
So you know that road which was opened for the public because it would save over 15 minutes of people's commuting time? Now that decision does not seem so good, you know, because it has become an accident prone zone.
