Q: Hi everyone..Recently happened to hear about the Water Transport Network has been submitted to the KMRL. Actually, can you explain why the water transport network is important for metro rail?
I came to know that the report will be submitted to the the State Government soon. After the cabinet approval, it will be submitted for the Centre’s approval and then will be handed over to the KfW Board. This project will improve the connectivity via waterways also.
Yeah..true that. The services will also give due focus to tourism. During the peak hours, the services will be more-passenger oriented while during the off-beat hours, the services will focus on tourism promotional activities.
One of my friends know about this project. He told me that the type of boats for each route will be finalised after analysing various factors including the density of ridership. For example, the frequency of services will be high for high ridership routes like Vypeen, Munambam, Fort Kochi and Varappuzha.
Two types of advanced, luxurious and comfortable high speed ferries with carrying capacity of more than 100 passengers and nearly 50 passengers will be pressed into service through the routes.
I think that the plan is to make one of the major boat jetties of each island along the high ridership routes to be developed in to a water transport hub. Along with the modernisation of the existing jetty or the construction of a new jetty, the property development of the area surrounding it will also be developed as a source of revenue.
Oh..yeah..there has been some other developments in this island. The street light system of the islands and the existing road network will also be revamped so as to provided better connectivity to the Hub. Walkways will be constructed at the roads leading to the jetty.
Hey, there is a concept also for this. The concept is "The one island one Hub" concept. This concept will be the highlight of the first phase of the project for the betterment of water transport sector for the Kochi agglomeration.
I came to know that ss per the DPR, priority will be given for the development of boat jetties along the high ridership routes. Also, you know, in the second phase, the connectivity to the remote islands will be given priority.
I think that the report has been created by the Centre’s Urban Mass Transit Company Limited or the UMTC. I think this will be executed in a phased manner with the help of the funds from KfW, the German Development Bank.
Yeah.. I also came to know about the detailed project report or dpr that was submitted to the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) recently. This projects nearly 700 crore rupees development plan for the water transport network for kochi.
