The Peelamedu district in Coimbatore had been hit hard during the power crisis during 2010 – 2012. There were daily power cuts lasting several hours. Domestic life was badly hampered. Schools and colleges were out of power during class hours, which proved to be a big challenge for the students. But towards the end of last year, things have started looking up for Peelamedu. Coimbatore which used to rely mainly on wind power and hydroelectric power has now started looking into other energy options like solar power. For example, a 1 MW solar plant commissioned by Swelect Energy Systems has been set up under REC Scheme near Coimbatore in October 2012 to help with the power situation in the city.
A. Hey, the power condition in Peelamedu was extremely bad from 2010 till half of last year. There would be 8 to 10 hour long power cuts, which disrupted everything in that area. It was not just Peelamedu that was affected, but also the rest of Tamil Nadu, especially the rural areas. But you don’t need to worry much as the condition has improved over the period of last year, with new power plants being set into motion. Alternative sources of energy like, solar energy and wind energy are being used to meet up the power demand of the state. Due to rising water levels in the Nilgiris and Pillur dams, hydro electricity generation has also increased.
