Selvapuram Lake free from Sewage

Q: I heard there's a plan for proper sewage disposal at Selvapuram? Is this civic issue no longer a problem? How will this affect real estate in the area?

So the proposed plan for the Ukkadam Periyakulam project was to beautify areas around water bodies and build a walkway and a seperate 2 wheeler lane but it's costing about 4.95 crores. So the latest is that if they get the funding for this then they will immediadety start work. But seriously that is just horrible is it happens because, the lakes ecosystem is at stake! the vehicles travelling in such close proximity to the water body will completely damage it. And I find it weird that a city that spends so much on rain water harvesting doesn't spend spending a lot on a project that harms an entire water body. Real estate will fall for sure in all these localities around the lake, especially once the lake is polluted.

Hey so there was even a community drive that happened sometime last week, where people voluntarily participated to rid the place off the garbage, plastic bottles, paper and what not. The Environment Conservation of India is going to carry out inspection work in the coming days or probably they must have already started. All this is very good but at the same time, Coimbatore still seems to be bringing pollution into another water body. The city corporation is preparing to implement a proposal to strengthen the bunds of Ukkadam Periyakulam, allowing two wheelers to pass along the water body. So a lot of environmentalists had a problem (who wouldn't?) and fought against this. I really hope this sewage treatment is going to work but I wish that the Corporation sees what they are doing!

Yeah, it's a pretty great thing what they are doing. The Selvachinthamani Lake is one of the smallest lakes in this 8 lake project so it has been taken up first. They even want to beautify the entire area around the lake, so even recreation is provided for people to enjoy. The project is to be funded by the Corporation and it approximately costs 2 crore. It should be fully completed by the end of the year, if not sooner. They're also trying to get some assistance from the Chennai River Restoration Trust apart from the assistance they already have from National Lake Conservation Policy. I think they also want as much involvement as possible so the end result is a huge success. That's why they also have a private voluntary group focusing on desilting the entire lake as part of the rejuvenation process. So let's see what happens :)

Yes, it is a known fact that Coimbatore has been facing water shortage recently. The aim of the project is to be able to regenerate ground water so that it can be used. But obviously, there are a number of pollutants in the lake, so it must be cleaned up. And the Selvachinthamani Lake in Selvapuram is the first one to be chosen by the Municipal Corporation to get a fence built around it and decentralized water treatment at the lakes main inlet! This is a very good thing for Coimbatore because the reclaiming of natural resources such as urban sources of water, will attract property buyers and environmentalists!
