Water Shortage in Edapally

Q: I heard that lack of water supply is a recurring problem in Edapally, Kochi. Have there been any developmental changes? Any other major civic issues in this locality?

Yes agreed! Last year Edapally faced some major civic issues. There was even a mosquito menace because of illegal hoardings and flex boards that were dumped all over the locality. This accumulation of debris attracted hundreds of mosquitos till the place became a breeding ground for them. Such disgusting unhygienic conditions. Finally, after the residents fought to remove these hoardings, Kochi Corporation understood the importance of a disposal plant and all these hoardings were further dumped at Brahmapuram waste treatment plant. But still property value is good in Edapally!

Insufficient rainfall is a cause for the drought but can't the authorities think about water conservation practices like rain water harvesting? Oh and what about the continued water logging and insufficient water supply? And the increased traffic congestion? Look, the place might have had a lot of work done on it in the past 3 years, but still why are we facing the same problems? Many residents in Edapally feel that not enough importance is paid to the civic issues by the Kochi Corporation. But then again, many feel that with the insufficient funds, this is the best that can be done. I still think there's room for lots more improvement in Edapally. It is possible to make Edapally like the next Marine Drive if only there were enough resources.

I think Edapally is a great place to live in. The good thing is, there actually have been a lot of improvements just between last year and now in Edapally. The roads have improved drastically as 12 of them have been freshly tarred including Vinayak Nagar road and Jawahar Nagar road. Even metalling and drainage system work has been fitted. Water logging that was severe in Ponnekere road has new drains. The new Edappally Raghavan Pillai Park is another great addition to the locality. And let's not forget the well lit roads with all the new streetlights. So this development has really helped Edapally grow as a locality :)

This water problem is why we dread the summer time. ALmost every year, the rise in summer heat and the lack of sufficient rainfall leads to water scarcity somewhere or the other in city of Kochi. West Kochi is affected the most though and central Kochi is affected to a lesser extent but still faces the consequences nonetheless. Edapally is a part of central Kochi and last year the situation got very bad. The authorities used to cut off water supply without even informing us before as they used to do some repair work or the other. This was very irritating because we relied on this water for drinking purposes! Yes, water tanker is there but always there'd be very little quantity. The Kerela Water Authorities should find a permanent solution to this problem as fast as possible!
