Ramanathapuram Drainage System

Q: I am quite apprehensive about moving to Ramanathapuram because I know it has very faulty water drainage since a long time. Have the Coimbatore civic authorities done anything about this situation?

What about the mosquito menace? Mosquitoes will breed anywhere there is stangnant water. And it is a known fact that there are open drains everywhere, with dirty water flowing on the streets in Ramanathapuram. This is so unhygienic and unsanitary for the residents because there is high chance of catching illnesses like dengue, malaria, viral fever and what not. This can potentially be very dangerous to one's health. Why aren't the civic authorities doing something about this? I think the municipal authorities should seriously consider using biological methods including fish species of Gambusia or hapalochilus and barbus and introduce them into water bodies, to tackle mosquito breeding.

That is really not the only problem that Ramanathapuram is facing. The bypass road along the eastern bank of the Periyakulam tank which connects Vilampatti Road and Srivilliputtur Main Road is not maintained properly. During peak hours, the stretch of Srivilliputtur Main Road from Vilampatti corner to the twin bridges near Government Hospital is blocked. Because of this, all heavy vehicles take a diversion on the bypass road. That's why this road should be widened and also re laid for smooth flow of traffic.

Yes everyone I think knows that Ramanathapuram has an open drainage system. It is unbeleivingly gross and disgusting. Stagnant drainage water will just be floating on the streets and we've had to put up with that foul stink for so long now. 2 years ago, there was an underground drainage scheme that was implemented by Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to rid the streets of this water but then works just stopped a year and a half ago. Silt and muck are deposited and block the drains. When it rains, the situation is beyond horrible and it gets very nasty to deal with. The civic authorities are supposed to be cleaning the drains daily, but does that happen? Evidently not.

This was and sometimes still is, a big headache that Ramanathapuram has been facing. 2 years ago, the mayor had come to ward 70 to do an inspection of the civic facilities in the area. Masal Layout is in the adjoining ward 60, and the residents from this area, asked the mayor to also inspect the open drains that were present in their vicinity. This problem is a recurring one and has been going on for sometime now, still authorities are not doing anything about this. What was supposed to be an inspection turned to a huge fight between the mayor's officials and the residents. The residents felt as though the inspection was shoddy and inefficient but the officials thought it was the residents who were acting very rude towards them So some of the residents who decided to protest till the mayor inspected the drain properly, were charged on some grounds or the other. This just goes to show how well the civic authorities deal with such issues in the locality. (sarcasm)
