Q: I've been reading in the news that Kaloor faces many drainage problems and even infrastructural projects get disrupted because of it. Have the civic authorities done anything to fix the civic issues of the locality?
Yes the entire worksite was flooded because of this and no works could be taken up for 1 or 2 days. The Metro work really cannot afford to get delayed any further because this is happening all over Kochi. So many problems are being raised because of this project and it's high time everyone cooperated together so that Kochi will get the development that it deserves. Water had to be pumped out with large pipes and then only could the work resume. Better planning and enforcement of civic facilities will help avoid such situations in the future!
Also there was the case of the burst pipeline in Kaloor that again delayed the project. The 600 mm cast iron pipeline surprisingly burst when mud excavation works were being undertaken at the project piling site. This cut off water supply to surrounding areas of Kaloor like High Court, Pachalam, Vaduthala, Kacheripady, S.R.M. Road, and Chittoor. The Kerela Water Authority can never detect where the precise location of the pipeline is and that's why so many times metro work has had to be stopped in MG road and Kaloor. 2 metres of the pipe had to end up being cut and replaced as a result of this chaos.
In Kaloor, metro authorities were alerted about the drain issue after the dumping of slurry into open drains. this clogged up the drains and there was stagnating drain water all over the area. I also heard about another problem in kaloor that happened more recently, which stopped the metro works. Government agencies have been reluctant o part with their land all along the metro stretch so areas such as Aluva, Kalamassery, Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor private bus stand, Ernakulam south and Vyttila, have stalled metro works. In the Kaloor stadium area, it is the Kerela state Housing Board had problems giving up their land in Kaloor bus stand, Kochi Corporation was hesitant to give up land here. But according to the government agencies, they really have no problem in giving up the land for metro works, only thing is that they need compensation from the government in doing so and they still haven't got that. That's why they can't give up the land formally yet.
The drains have been badly damaged in areas like MG road, kaloor, and other parts where construction of metro rail is going on. These areas will face the risk of inundation during the monsoon and all the drains are badly in need of repair. Most of the drains in Kaloor was damaged as a result of sand and other construction materials being dumped in it as a result of the metro rail project. Now the town will have to undertake a lot of cleaning procedures for these drains. The mayor actually just wrote to the CM about this issue without taking immediate action and this worsened the situation.
Kaloor has faced some drastic civic issues in the past. First and foremost the slaughterhouse in Kaloor needs to be remodelled as the Cochin Port Trust still hasn't given Kochi Corporation the required sanction to set up a state of the art abbatoir in the locaity. Residents of the area are disgusted by the lack of tending to the civic issues as a result of the slaughterhouse. The blood from here actually seeps into the drains and canals and enters the water level. Such unhygienic conditions need to be dealt with by the civic authorities. However, alternative solutions were provided and one was that the blood from the slaughterhouse needs to be treated instead of closing the drains. The sanitary issue of the slaughterhouse is in a better condition although blood treatment is definitely still required.
