Q: I am David from Kochi. I heard that the Kaloor market will be shifted to a new location as it is said to causing too much congestion in the area. Where will it be shifting to?
There are over 70 shops that operate from the old market right now. And the GCDA's old market has been idle for the past one and a haf decade and the building are falling off. This was constructed with plans to slowly improve and rehabilitate traders that operate out of here.
You know the GCDA had plans to build a huge multi storey building here but now they have changed those plans to something different. Now they have decided to help and rehabilitate the vendors that will be relocated to the new location.
A lot of things is expected to happen here. A waste processing plant will be installed on the premises, and roads that approach the bridge will be laid again. Retaining walls will also be constructed on the sides of the canal and fencing will be done to prevent dumping of waste.
The Kochi COrporation will stop with the process of renewing licenses for shops and other establishments that are seen operating in the old market area once the bridge is constructed and starts with its operations.
The Greater Cochin Decvelopmental Authority (GCDA) Chairman was also present in the premises and while speaking on this said that the bridge construction will be done on or between 5 months time. I think that is a fair time if they happen to complete it on schedule.
Did you know the bridge will also provide connectivity from the market to Sastha Temple Road, Golden Jubilee Road and Manapattiparambu Road. The bridge will have sufficient width to facilitate the movement of two heavy vehicles at the same time.
GCDA has taken the initiative and has decided to construct a new 8.5m-wide bridge at an estimated cost of over Rs 1.40 crore which will provide a new entry to the market from Kaloor through the road running parallel to the Thevara-Perandoor canal.
The mayor spoke at a stone laying ceremony of the Kaloor-Manapattiparambu bridge a couple weeks ago spoke on ths issue and said that the construction of the market was done way back in 2001. But an understanding is being reached between the Kochi Corporation and the Developmental authority.
Yes. All the shops that are present around here will be asked to relocate to the market area owned by the GCDA in the Manapattiparambu area in Kaloor. You know the mayour of Kochi spoke about this and said that an understanding will be reached between the GCDA and the KDA and the move will be planned.
Yes, David. At present the the area where the market is is very congested between the Kaloor and the Deshabhimani junction. Citing this reason the Greater Cochin Developmental Authority (GCDA) is planning to shift the market to solve the issue.
