Q: I'm going to have to move to Thadagam soon but I've heard a lot of people say that driving here is a pain because of the bad roads. Have the civic authorities done anything about this issue?
I'm quite upset that this scheme road project is yet to take off. I don't understand why the mayor promised to develop one road a year but still nothing has been done about it. This plan was on the 2013-2014 budget and now it is part of the 2014-2015 budget also. Even the thadagam-perur link road which was supposed to have been completed ages ago still hasn't taken off. At the rate they're going, I doubt even one scheme road will be completed by 2016. If the council had actually focused on doing this, coimbatore would have had 15 scheme roads by now. They should seriously first commit to pending projects before taking on new projects.
I think there are growing civic issues on the rise in Coimbatore as a result of the increased population. Because of this there is no proper garbage collection, bad roads, frequent power cuts and lack of adequate water supply. I'm sure that if the civic authorities put their minds to it, and with public participation, this can surely be tackled and we can free the city from such hurdles. Even though I'm a resident of Thadagam road, I know that most localities in Coimbatore are facing all these problems.
Hey yeah that road was widened! from 7 m to 10 m and the project had cost 3 crore. The 3.5 km stretch is now a 4 lane road. The road department had to clear trees and elctricity poles in order for this work to be undertaken. Really good that it was but it caused a lot of traffic problems. Situation is definitely better now and hopefully the scheme roads are also going to be developed soon.
Yes but actually now the corporation has proposed for the formation of 11 scheme roads in order to make the traffic situation better. The corporation has already allocated 2 crore for this project and is hoping to get 124 crore more for the laying of this 16.8 km stretch scheme road. 170 scheme roads in Coimbatore were selected for development but the first one was the Thadagam - Perur scheme road where works are going to start very soon. Developing this particular road was even confirmed by the 2013-2014 budget. The Thadagam-Ponniahrajapuram-Chokkampudur Link Road also is on the plan for development.
Going on this road was a big nuisance especially 2 years ago when there were lot of public works going on. A drainage work led to a lot of chaos and a number of traffic bottlenecks were caused as a result. Vendors, electricity poles, parked vehicles all crowded thadagam road and there was literally no space for moving vehicles to go. There was a project by State Highways Department to widen the road from 7 metres to 10 metres and it was undertaken. But still many traffic jams are still there.
