Drainage condition of Arun Nagar, Tipu Nagar in Coimbatore

Q: How is the current drainage condition of the city looking with the impending monsoons? Is it all good, or do we have the risk of waterlogging? I’m especially interested in areas like Arun Nagar, Tipu Nagar etc

Actually you know, there was an effort to clean up these drains sometime back. You know that canal that runs from the Big Tank via Karumbukkadai? Yeah well, the corporation tried to desilt it, but they were unable to do so because of several problems. One of the major issue was that the blockage was so heavy, that even the desilter machine was getting stuck in all the garbage. Word was that it would be cleaned manually, but nothing ever happened after that. It has been almost 2 years since the last cleaning :(

That’s right, completely clogged! The main canals across the city, like the Karupparayan Odai, Sanganoor Pallam, Ganapathy-Singanallur Drain, Raja Vaikal in Kurichi are all full of leaves and waste and all kinds of disgusting debris. In some cases all these illegal encroachments also are posing problems. These unauthorised buildings are coming up all over and in most cases they block the flow of the natural drains. If nothing is done about this situation then we are all going to sink when the monsoon hits.

I completely agree with you. We need these natural drains properly functioning. They can carry the run-off water from the roads and the storm water drains. But, keeping the condition of these natural drains in mind, I don’t think we have much scope for naturally reducing water stagnation in the city. Most of these natural drains are completely clogged up and will be of no use or help to carry the rain water into the tanks placed across the city.

I’m glad that you asked this question. Actually the localities that you mentioned, both run a severe risk of getting waterlogged. What the authorities are not understanding is that we really need to prepare these parts of Coimbatore from the impending northeast monsoon, which is scheduled to hit us in just a couple of months. One of the best ways to help the overall drainage situation, is to improve the existing natural drainage system that we have here.
