It is going to be a public-private venture, and the pattern being followed is the "design, build, finance, operate and transfer" or DBFOT. 10 acres of land is being provided by the govt in Brahmapura for this plant.

The govt. is going to adopt the Swiss Challenge approach while constructing the plant - which is a kind of a competitive bidding approach. Bidders wont have any unfair advantages, and they'll get enough incentives to come up with innovative ideas

From what Ive heard, the budget is estimated to be a whopping Rs 350 cr. Initially the minister for urban affairs was in a bit of a dilemma about what technology to use here to dispose of the waste, but now they've decided to go for a waste to energy method here.

The Villapilsala plant had actually shut down 2 years ago, and that's why there was excessive dumping of waste in Brahmapuram which really angered the residents. The condition was extremely unhygienic. Especially if epidemics are going to break out. Kochi's standard of living will drastically fall. The corporation has been known to make many mistakes in the past when dealing with civic issues. They should not have burned a huge amount of plastic in the first place as this was what caused a fire and this is so dangerous for the residents welfare. This plant better come up soon. Don't let it stop you from moving there though! I have a feeling that the new plant will definitely fix the problem.

There was also a plastic shredder installed right? No actually I don't think it is there yet but there are plans for making it to treat plastic waste which also caused a big problem for Brahmapuram as there was so much plastic waste clogging up the drains and what not. Although I think the state government is feeling a little stingy to spend on a waste disposal plant right now :| The fire that happened a year ago was what initiated the need for a fuel free plastic disposal unit. Who ever thought burning plastic was the best option to dispose of it anyway?

What happened to the last plant was many technical difficulties were there. it was being managed by a private company ad I don't think they did a very good job. Also barely any amount of garbage used to be treated per day. Now the new plant is to treat 500 tonnes of waste a day and also will be modified with advanced techniques. KITCO is already preparing for the thermal based power plant to treat non biodegradable waste. With this in check, I really doubt you'll face any difficulty living in Brahmapuram.

Yes that is exactly why there is going to be a new solid waste treatment plant in Brahmapuram and the project will be undertaken this year. It is going to be located adjacent to the existing plant and is said to cost 350 crore which will be beneficial to the Kochi Corporation, 5 neighbouring municipalities and 9 grama panchayats. Kochi Corporation is to take care of the implementation, KITCO is to be the transactional advisor and Suchwita Mission is to be the Corporation's backup support. They want to implement a decentralized waste system where biodegradable waste from households and all that will get treated at the source itself. Hopefully this should be a better alternative.

Hello. I am a resident from Thrikkakara and I have to tell you that the stench from Brahmapuram waste disposal plant that is located there is really very unbearable sometimes. The Thrikkakara Residents’ Associations’ Apex Council are trying to do the best they can to fix this issue and have already had a word with the thrikkakara municipality but they still don't seem to be doing much. Thrikkakara is a fast growing locality which will soon turn into an IT hub. This sort of issue can seriously affect the locality's potential. Kochi's entire value will be at stake despite the smart city project if the conditions are still going to be this unhygiencic. Many are closeby to Kochi like Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kollam, Kannur and Thalassery are facing big garbage disposal problems.
