Q: Hey I am moving to Selvapuram soon but I've heard that residents have complained about untreated garbage and waste water in the area in the past. Has the situation improved in any way?
The problem was with the fact that Selvapuram had lack of proper garbage disposal system that further led to blocked drains. People used to throw waste anywhere and everywhere because there were not enough public dustbins, and because of this plastic and other debris used to fly away and clog the drains. That's why the sewage problem became so intense and drastic. The residents themselves should know better, even the civic authorities should act fast. Fault is on both sides. You should still move to Selvapuram though because at the end of the day it is a good locality. These issues have drastically declined since 2 years ago :)
Actually there isn't going to exactly be a new plant. Basically in Selvapuram, the Selvachinthamani lake is soon going to be free from sewage :) This is done in order to replenish the ground water levels and also for clean drinking water supply. The city municipal corporation has already agreed to allot 2 crore for this project to contruct a fence around the lake and intall a decentralised water treatment inlet in the lake itself. Finally urban water bodies can be pollution free. And this is just one of the 8 lakes in Coimbatore that has been chosen for this project. Soon all lakes will be completely cleaned.
Yeah in Kallamedu the situation was so much worse because there were no toilets 2 years ago and everyone had to defacte outside in the bushes literally. The residents had pleaded with the civic authorities to connect their toilets with the underground drainage system and works for that completed that also happened recently only. Even electricity wasn't an issue here but still toilet provisions were not there for very long time. Also the garbage situation in Selvapuram was beyond horrible. Residents were accustomed to seeing so many open dumping grounds all over the place. But don't worry, I know this may sound bad, but now Selvapuram is no longer facing these problems like before. There's also a new sewage treatment plant installed here I think.
There were many places where sewage was choked up in Selvapuram. The civic authorities could have easily solved the problem by just linking the septic tank to the underground drainage system but obviously they didn't do that, giving one excuse after the other. But apparently it was the duty of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearence Board to do the work because they're the ones who intially laid out the pipelines. The board officials decided that since there were plans to demolish those illegal structures, there was nothing that could be done till that point, and residents had no choice but to suffer. Finally some cleaning work eventually happened and now the situation is much better. But we won't forget how bad it was at some point.
Oh Selvapuram and Kallamedu both faced horrible civic issues just about 2 years ago. There was so much stagnant sewage water in the streets with the civic authorities doing nothing about it for an entire year. The residents really had a tough time with the smell and unhygienic conditions they had to go through because of this. That too this sewage is what comes from household toilets and there used to be a tank to collect all the dirty water but that tank stopped being functional and it was just a mass spillage of sewage everywhere. The main reason for this pathetic drainage condition was because of unauthorised constructions that came up over areas where the drains crisscrossed. Obviously this affected the entire system and the drains opened up.
