Condition of the Ukkadam Lake

Q: Whats the present condition of the Ukkadam lake? Heard some negative things about it. Im moving into the nearby locality, and I wanted to know about it in general. Just any problems that I should be aware of?

All the sewage from the whole city has been dumped in these lakes over many years due to lack of choice. Cleaning up the channels requires a huge investment and is a long process, and the developmental authorities arent showing any initiative.

So how the whole system works is, the excess water from the Ukkadam lake fills up Valankulam and eight other tanks. The water in these tanks boost the groundwater level and is used for agriculture in specific areas. But the problem is that the Valankulam lake has completely dried up.

I know! The tanks look filled up but half of it is filled with drainage and sewage that comes from the city. In 2003, business houses and NGOs got together and cleared the channels. But it has been clogged again, and no steps taken since then

I heard about some contradictory opinions about the condition of the tank. While some officials claim that they had been desilted and channels cleared, others believe that since huge investment was required for the process, it had not been undertaken.

I know. Another thing of concern is the unsufficient water in the tank. Whats surprising is that despite having sufficient rainfall at catchment areas, the tank isn't completely filled either.

Yeah, I mean, not only is the water getting polluted but there is a really bad smell around there. I went there a few days ago because my friend lives nearby, and the stench in the area is unbearable.

Im sorry to say this but the condition of the Ukkadam lake in the city is cause for concern as several plastic bags and drainage has blocked all their water channels.
