Updates on the Madukkarai - Walayar flyover in Coimbatore

Q: Dear friends. I have been commuting on a daily basis from Coimbatore to Palakkad and it has been a daily headache to cross the flyover construction site. Has there been any update on this? It has been over an year.

There are some alternate routes to bypass this flyover construction site. And now people have given up on the completion of this important infrastructure. The downside is that all the secondary bypass routes are spoilt with many buses and trucks chosing to go that way avoiding the highway. Only if the contractors can be fueled financially, they will take it forward. Only the pillars are ready so far for the flyover. that too in two years.

Yeah! The area near K G Chavadi, which lies between Walayar and Madukkarai is laden with speed breakers, which technically should not be placed in highways. Several accidents occur because of these, especially at the night. Walayar is also a major check post for heavy duty vehicles, and the resulting traffic jam is a chaos!

I read that the national highway authorities officer released a statement that these construction companies couldn't build the funds to invest in the promised project and got 2 years delay sanction. Now 2014 is ending and still work is left incomplete. The most dangerous part about this is the increased chances of accidents.

Well, these projects began in 2011. Then it was a 2 year deal between the contractor and the government. I think this was a BOT (build - operate - transfer) contract. So the contractors have to pay for the construction., and retrieve their investments through the operations.

According to the newspapers, the contractors for these flyover projects got two year extensions. I wonder how can they be easily granted permisson like this, and expect us travellers to go on adjusting. Some motorists had even voiced their opinion saying there have been several accident sin the zone due to zero signboards

Yes, there has been major sluggishness with respect to the flyover project near the Kerala Tamil Nadu border near walayar in coimbatore. They were supposed to have been completed in 2013 last year. it is now going to be the end of 2014. The governent and authorities are being really irresponsible.

Oh I see. I heard some of my colleagues mentioning the same thing when they were traveling to Kerala by road. There is this incomplete barren flyover construction site in the middle of the highway right after Madukkarai. Shortage of funds and governemnt changes have been the reason for lack of care about finishing this work.

I completely endorse your frustration in this regard. Two main flyover projects, one in Madukkkarai Walayar zone and another in Chengapalli Neelambur area have long crossed their promised timelines for construction. The government has not been supportive apparently. And the poeple suffer ultimately.
