what the repair works are doing is that the concrete wearing course will be broken and re-laid with the proper gradient and drains so that water can seep away. I think there will also be a 25 mm layer of mastic asphalt that will be laid manually..and the rest of the work then..

I heard that the total cost of the repair work was about Rs. 1.72 crores. The first phase of the repair work are being done to cover all the potholes that are developing all over the bridge. Even though last year a repair work was done, the potholes developed soon.

true...i got to know that though the bridge's tarred surface was scooped out and was resurfaced using a fresh layer of bitumen, the concrete was worn out...i think now all the bitumen surface have been milled out.

But, because of the ongoing repair works, the 900 metre long Kumbalam-Aroor bridge on the NH 47 bypass road will also not allow the motorists to pass through till the mid of april. This will surely prompt the motorists to use the parallel bridge, i guess.

From the information I got from some officials, the Road markings will be done shortly. The removing of encroachers as well as haphazardly parked vehicles would further ensure the smooth movement of vehicles at Thoppumpady and other rush areas of this region.

Hey, I heard that the damaged hand rails on the bridge have all been replaced. Iron sheets have been placed over the replaced wooden planks and the surface has been tar-coated. One friend of mine who works in the PWD told that the works have an year-long guarantee.

Exactly, I think that the delay in repair caused much problem. There was a real traffic problem on the new bridge, especially during the opening days of the Kochi Muziris Bienniale which coincided with peak tourist season. Officials were taking a stand that the delay was because of the delay to get the good quality thambakam wood and time taken to remove rusted iron girders.

you know, the entry to the old bridge was restricted to two and three wheelers till it was closed for repair in December last year. After that all the four wheelers had to use the old bridge. That was the main problem, i guess.

I came to know that a cross bar is being erected to permit only vehicles that are less than 2.20 metres tall through the bridge. I think that this will considerably lessen the traffic snarls on either side of Mattancherry BOT Bridge and the Thoppumpady bridge.

Sure...this is a very good news for the motorist. Especially to those who are commuting to West Kochi. the Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to permit cars and SUVs also along the old Mattancherry bridge.

Hey, this is true..I also heard about this news..I think this will be reopened to the traffic very soon...on February 13th..I think that the resurfacing work has all finished. I think this will benefit in regulating the traffic...no?
