Mattancherry Locality details for a calm environment

Q: When I think of Kochi, I envision a calm, sprawling city that looks out over the ocean. And I want to keep it that way without spending much on a house. What do you think about Mattancherry in that regard?

yeah...moreover there are some good hospitals that are easily accessible from this region making its social infrastructure quite good. The Fort kochi government hospital, Fathima Clinic, Meera Eye Clinic, Government hospital, Mattancherry Government Ayurveda Hospital etc in this locality near to the backwaters.

Mattancherry is a nearby locality to Fort Kochi. It is quite famous. This area is quite good for living. The connectivity to the city is quite good here. Mostly the people depend on the waterways for transportation to the Kochi Jetty area. But, you can also travel by bus if it is near to Kadavanthra and some important places like that.

From what I’ve learnt, the point of argument of the GCDA is that this bridge needs regular maintenance works otherwise the wooden planks in its middle tend to get damaged pretty soon. The PWD had actually done some work on the approach road a few years ago. But they couldn’t do much work on the bridge as they couldn’t find any interested contractors.

Yeahy I heard that the GCDA has agreed to take up the maintenance of the bridge from under the private company Gammon Infrastructure Projects Ltd., who were initially in charge of it. GCDA even signed a contract with the company for the tenure of this toll fee bridge

BTW, there is a toll bridge here in Mattancherry. But actually its not collecting toll at the moment. Actually the Mattancherry Build Operate and Transfer bridge project ended sometime in April and that's why toll collection for this bridge also stopped. Thats good because a pretty heavy toll was imposed on motorists for 13 years and 9 months, since when the project began in 2001.

Mattancherry was actually on my list of localities-to-live-in while I was in Kochi, but I never did end up living there. I just put up at a friend’s place nearby in Karuvelipady, which also overlooks the sea by the way. I can tell you something of the property rates in Mattancherry, since I’ve done house hunting over there for some time. In Mattancherry, you buy plots, residential houses, and also apartments. The price per square feet for buying an apartments or house in this locality would come up to an average of around Rs. 2,300 to Rs. 3,000 dpending upon the location within Mattancherry itself. If you’re looking to rent, then you’ll end up spending around Rs. 8 to Rs. 12 per square feet of space.

Hello! I wish Kochi was just as you want it to be. Believe me, I’m in need of peace and calmness just as much as you. But, for the same reason, I would dissuade you from living in Mattancherry. See, it’s close to sea, as per your budget, and really quaint to begin with. But when you actually live there, you might have some undesirable problems. A few years back, the residents of Mattancherry had complained to the local administrators of the lack of a proper water supply and a well-functioning drainage system. I don’t know how far these issues have been solves, but I will say that you need to be extra careful if you’re buying or renting out a house over here.

Hahaha. You have envisioned most of Kochi wrong, my friend. Maybe your imagination might have held some validity a hundred years back, but now, Kochi is a bustling city with people chattering everywhere. This is the reason why there are so many suburbs popping up out of nowhere around the outskirts of Kochi. Mattancherry, I agree, is a place where you get half your deal. You’ll get a good view of the ocean, but I cannot promise you anything about the calm surroundings you so desire. This locality seems tiny, because of the small size of the roads. You’ll find that most of the houses here have been built as per bygone architectural designs of the past.
