Indore BRTS success

Q: I read in the news that Indore's Bus Rapid Transit System can be compared to international levels. Has it positively affected real estate in the city? Or are there problems caused because of this project?

Bottom line is that Indore really doesn't need so many buses. The project would be able to contribute more to the growth of Indore if it only optimized on resources. The latest news related to BRTS has talked about how it violates the state law of purchasing diesel vehicles. About 4 years ago the law passed stated that, by the year 2013, all public transportation vehicles must switch to CNG. All auto rickshaws made the switch. When BRTS first came out, they promised us that pollution would decrease but to this I laugh out loud! 1300 trees were cut for the BRTS corridor and the law requires the project to plant 5 trees for every 1 tree cut. But that never happened! And the pollution is just going to increase if BRTS decides that it will stick with the diesel bus. Very hypocritical of the Indore civic authorities for allowing this to happen.

Okay the BRTS has to taken on 50,000 passengers everyday in order to break even. Then that means 8 buses will have to have 50 passengers on board and the bus would have to make 123 rounds per day. Which is totally unrealistic! I Get that there's a lot of excitement when it comes to these sort of developmental projects but I'd like to know why the focus isn't even in the main city. It is only in the outskirts in all the 'prime' locality areas suited for real estate. Aren't the buses supposed to serve the purpose of transporting people from one place to the next? In either case, don't rely too heavily on this project to boost up Indore's real estate by a large margin. There are many city rules that are also violated because of this project.

Ofcourse everybody has different opinions on the BRTS system. I'm sorry to say that mine is going to be a negative one :) When BRTS first came to Indore, we were all obviously super excited. But as each week of its functioning passed, we became more and more disappointed. The bus schedule isn't always followed and sometimes BRTS provides very shoddy service. The buses that were supposed to have an automatic ticket vending machine, Information bureau and atms in all BRTS corridors is taking its own sweet time! I think the BRTS is a great way to improve the infrastructure in the city and that it should be introduced in all cities. But it should also be properly maintained right? What's the point otherwise?

Hey so the BRTS project started in Indore last year in May. It has been doing really well. No first world country can ever think of well rounded development without an intelligent transport system and that's exactly what BRTS does for the city of Indore! This year, Indore actually received a nomination for the award for sustainable transport along with other countries like Argentina, China and South Korea where they have similar BRTS. There are 52 new buses in the city, and it is easy to commute to the BRTS corridor because all buses stop there. Because of this new system, pollution and traffic levels in our city have decreased! :)
