Waste Management in RS Puram

Q: I'm quite intrigued by the project to compost wet waste in RS Puram. How well has it affected real estate in the area?

The thing about India is, that even though people are aware about the importance of recycling, they literally need to be trained to do it properly. 80% of the companies in Coimbatore have already been issued notices to comply with the Shunya project. Not many have followed through efficiently enough but still this project has been of immense help to Coimbatore. Recycled materials are sold to ITC and other such IT companies. RS Puram was the perfect place to start this project because it really needed a proper system for waste disposal. Now that this facility is there, I suggest you go ahead and get an apartment there because the locality is really nice and well developed for Coimbatore standards.

yes the garbage truck drivers have are being taught to collect only segregated garbage and identify unsegregated garbage. Have you also heard of the new garbage truck that will drive all over the city collecting garbage? The Coimbatore Corporation wanted to extend this project to big companies and other IT companies as well. So this truck drives around and collects vast amounts of garbage everyday. The new truck has a lot of compartments, not limited to wet, dry and non biodegradable waste. It also has compartments for other kinds of recyclable waste like plastic and glass and what not. This is a great thing for the city of Coimbatore!

Actually now there's a problem with the Shunya project because many residents in RS Puram weren't corporating with the waste disposal scheme. Segregation at the source didn't really happen and the residents were just dumping all the waste together. The sanitary workers have issued notices to all those households who do this and have said that they aren't going to dispose of the waste that isn't segregated. This project is really effective because the 80 sanitary workers working on it already have collected about collected 3,844 kg of saleable waste between October 2, 2013 and February 14, 2014! the remaining wet waste ofcourse goes to the Vellalore dumb yard to get composted. But the 200 households that didn't corporate, should because it's high time they see the need for projects like this!

Yes this project was implemented last year and it is called the Shunya project! The ultimate aim is to establish zero waste. The site where this composting happens is in Thadagam road in RS Puram . What happens is that the source of waste from each household in the locality first needs to be segregated and then all the wet waste including kitchen and other briodegradable waste is taken and composted. This is a really efficient form of waste management and it also shows the advanced thinking of the Coimbatore Corporation. This has really helped in 3 ways. First, the quantity of waste taken to Vellalore dump yard is lessened. Secondly, the fuel expenditure involved has also come down. Lastly, locality waste is processed in the locality itself and this really saves time and effort! :)
