Q: Hey I have a 2 wheeler but I am scared to come to Vedapatti because of the many stray dogs that are very ferocious in this locality. Are the civic authorities doing anything about this situation?
The Seeranaickenpalayam centre run by Humane Animal Society is the only place that is functionally implementing the ABC program. But now civic authorities have said that they have signed MoU's with 2 animal NGO's to help with the proceedings of sterilization. They've also increased the monthly target from 250 to 500 in order to catch up. But this is hardly going to dent the city's street dog population which, according to the estimate of animal welfare organisations, stands at around 70,000 to 1 lakh dogs. Also the civic authorities have decided to take on sterilisiing street dogs as per residents in trouble and not per geographical pattern. So work is extremely slow, hopefully problem should be solved soon.
Wherever you find eateries, dustbins and tasmacs, you'll see a number of street dogs in that area. After 11 pm there is no chance I can take my bikeout, so I just use the car. Thing is that places in the heart of the city also have street dogs, but they are not this ferocious. Sterilised dogs are tamer than non sterilised dogs, so I think most of the dogs in places like Race Course road have benefitted from the ABC program. But not the dogs in far localities like Townhall, Nagarajapuram, Veerakeralam junction, Nambialaganpalayam and Seeranaickenpalayam. Program in the city is yet to be implemented effictively.
Actually the Coimbatore Corporation had to do something about this every month and I doubt they've been following through. It is called the Animal Birth Control program where the civic authorities have to sterilize 250 dogs every month. But they keep falling short of their target even though the number of dogs in the city are increasing everyday. I work in Vedapatti and I have to ride home to Sai Baba colony everyday. The situation is so bad that if a dog is sleeping also, he will immediately wake up if he senses you're nearby and will chase you. My friend and I have been chased by a whole pack this one time. Really it is very dangerous.
Oh my god I know exactly what you're talking about. I also had to go to Vedapatti to visit my relatives every so often. It was only possible for me to go after 9 pm and I used to go on the Sundapalayam road. I always have to drive very carefully over there because of the threat in this area. It is not criminals like robbers and murderers who I am scared of. I dread the street dogs in the area because they have become a major menace to those of us riding on 2 wheelers. They chase you, continuously barking and even attempt to bite. This has caused lot of accidents and I actually saw one happen in front of my eyes. We had to immediately chase the dog away, otherwise he would have surely bitten the poor fellow who ended up falling off his bike. As if Coimbatore Corporation will do anything about this.
