Civic Problems in Vytilla Road Junction

Q: I'll need to travel everyday in Vytilla as my work is elsewhere. Apparently the roads are not good and lot of traffic is there. Has the issue been addressed or still it is like that?

There is a high demand to build a Vytilla underpass from all the residents and this is going to be undertaken pretty soon. The district administration has come up with a ‘portal-frame structure flyover’ which is what the flyover will look like. This requires no pillars in the middle of the portal as vehicles an go around. Vytilla junction is one of the busiest in the state and finally something is going to be done to abate the traffic now. The reason for this bottleneck is because of shoddy NHAI work for an underpass that does not even let 2 cars go through. It is that narrow. The project can be completed in 3 phases and should take off pretty soon. 2 small flyover each located 50 m away from the junction will help ease traffic. Temporary relief for right now has also been provided. There is ample space for this project and that's why even the cost for it is less, only 75 lakhs.

But there were many changes implemented on Vytilla road because of the loops that were built to stop the cross road traffic and the media that extended through the junction. There were two circular loops at the vytilla mobility hub. Heavy vehicles now use outer loop and small vehicles use the inner circle. The construction was completed sometime last year and it has done wonders to helping traffic in this area.

It is quite unbeleivable how the stretch still hasn't been developed. It really should though. The 6 km stretch has even halted metro work and this is actually very annoying for the people traveling on this road. Even the junction has poor infrastructure and it's been that way for a while now. The Corporation promised us a number of new flyovers, and various new developments in this area but it never happened. As a result, there is still a lot of traffic chaos in the Vytilli junction. The work for Vytilla Pettah road can be done only in the small stretch between the Mobility Hub and the corporation park nearby as the land acquisition process in the remaining stretch is pending. Works should be carried out soon to solve crisis of traffic problem.

I think the reason for this long delay is because the kochi metro rail project is coming in the way of this road widening project. The project had to be completed in order for metro rail work to start but ofcourse that didn't happen. But this plan of extending the Petta Vytilla road is a great idea because I hear they're also going to improve underground drainage and provide parking lots wherever possible.

Yeah the road has known to have caused a lot of problems in the past for commuters because it is so narrow. Now the Vytilla - Petta road is going to be widened sometime soon. They still need to get land aquisition and all that but administrative department has already agreed to the project. The 15 metre road is being widened to 26 m and 7.5 metres wide on either side. Median is to be 4 metres and footpaths on either side 1.5 metres. Sounds all very nice but I don't get why the project is still on paper and hasn't been executed yet.
