Thevara Ferry Service Enquiry

Q: I might most probably be moving to Thevara but I want to know about the transportation facilities available here. Has the ferry resumed services again?

Apart from ferry service there are also buses and other methods of transport but only thing is traveling on thevara road is not a very pleasent experience. The locality is very nice and on the outskirts so it is quiet and peaceful. That's why many people are moving here now and there is a big strain on the existing infrastructural facilities in this area. I think that the Thevara junction to UP bridge road should be widened to ease traffic. A parallel road from Kasturba Nagar to Thevara Kundannoor should also be constructed. This will seriously improve transport facilities in this locality.

Reaching the Thevara college junction was super peaceful from Nettoor with the ferry service because it is only 1.5 km away. But if we have to take national highway route in Kundannoor then it is 4 km away plus there is lots of traffic. This really was the quickest way to reach Thevara. Priyadarshini used to conduct 40 services a day and could seat a capacity of 15 people including 3 two wheelers. When the service stopped, there was a temporary boat that made 800 bucks daily but this soon stopped because it couldn't take many passengers and wasn't very well maintained.

The municipality really had to end up spending a lot of money for this ferry service and many a time they went into loss. This is because they were only making 1400 to 1500 per day which barely met the diesel cost. Apart from that 750 bucks had to be given to the 2 boatmen employees as daily wages. And more costs were cut for repair work and all that. This was a big expense that's why it stopped. It is very good that they are starting this again because it is the fastest way for me to get to Thevara college junction from Nettoor.

The ferry boat is called Priyadarshini and was constructed at the cost of 12 lakh by the Maradu municipality. This fibre boat is going to start services once again once maintenance and repair work is over. The municipality chairman is quite cheesed off with one Joy George who had the responsibility of making the boat last time but did such a shooddy job that repair work had to constantly be done. Now the maintenance work is costing 1.63 lakh. There's a criminal case filed against this Mr George for using poor quality materials for making the boat.

You must be referring to the Nettoor Thevara ferry service that stopped a year ago. Actually this ferry service started sometime in 2012 and transports hundreds of people from Nettoor and Thevara and was extremely useful. But because of some technical issue, the boat service stopped and residents from Nettoor found it very difficult to commute. But now they can breathe a sigh of relief because the boat service is back once again! :)
