Q: I've read a couple of articles about how Indore has a lot of civic usses such as water shortage and pollution. Has the situation improved? Any info would help as I am moving there shortly!
It is sad that Indore being the prestigious commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh faces, the city faces so many civic problems on an everyday basis. The real estate is really picking up in Indore and there are a lot of insfrastructure developments in the city that is drawing IT professionals, MNC's and a whole bunch of property investors. So why has the civic facilities remained this pathetic? Conveniently however, there was an answer to that from Sarang. He blamed it on all the Congress corporators but has promised that there is going to round the clock work and all lack of civic facilities would be rectified. Hopefully he keeps to his word.
The situation is better now. About 40% of the water in Indore comes from borewells and the rest is from narmada pipelines. I think people have finally understood the seriousness of the neglect of civic facilities that they started to protest. This proved effective as Indore Municipal Corporation took action for a clean up of the city and penalty against those civic officials slacking off on their job. There was also a really bad case of poor garbage disposal to the extent that you couldn't escape the foul stench in some areas. A resident ended up taking the initiative and by giving incentives to cleaners, he even got other residents to help clean the city of its garbage. The garbage disposal plant can only dispose of 500 tonnes of garbage everyday and Indore produces 800 tonnes. Another display of over population at its worst!
I remember how much I had to suffer at some point during summer time. Indore was facing acute water shortage in all parts of the city, even the posh places. Having a bath twice a day was a luxury and my family had to work to just conserve water as much as they could. One person was in charge of talking to the Indore water authorities everyday about the water situation. There seemed to be never enough. I don't live there anymore but I know that the situation has only improved at a snail's pace. Indore used to suffer a lot during the summer because of this. Even electricty supply was not good which used to be another big headache.
