Q: I think the Khan river rejuvenation project will not be fruitful, as the water there is just too dirty. I dont know how they are ever planning to make it drinkable, and ultimately this expensive project will only be a fail. What do you guys think? Let's have a discussion.
"So according to one of several such directive from the NGT to the IMC they were told to ensure that no garbage must be dumped in any of the rivers.Municipal commissioner was directed to file an affidavit by March 21, 2015, highlighting steps taken by them for prevention of further dumping of municipal solid waste and de-silting of the rivers.
"
The NGT also had asked the IMC and the district administration to clear the encroachments in the the banks and beds of the rivers back in August last year and had told them to file a report on it by the March 31 of this year.
Do you know why the bench came to this decision, it was because of a PIL from The order is the result of petition filed by social activist Kishor Kodwani on bringing back the Khan and Saraswati rivers, flowing through the city, to life.
But the thing here is the IMC could not even comply with that order from the Bhopal bench. See I think the OP was right in saying what he said because the authorities are basically useless and cannot do their jobs right.
A Bhopal based central zone bench is handling the issue of the cleanup and they have ordered the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to prepare a monthly plan on the works as to how much can be completed and has asked them to make sure that those targets are complete. They feel that this can actually keep the work going. I think so too.
The NGT is pretty strict with regards to this. They have asked the district collector to talk to the members of the tribunal evey week to discuss and also report the course of action that have taken to complete the work. I think this close monitoring will help. But let's see. Nothing can be said as yet.
Now the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stepped in to make sure that the works go according to plans and that it run smoothly. I am not sure how that will work out. The NGT has asked the district collector to make sure the works are going fine with the saraswati and khan rivers.
The sad part is despite so much money and energy being spent. Vast amounts of untreated industrial effluents and other toxic wastes has made the Khan river a major culprit in polluting the Kshipra, which is considered a sacred river.
You know the maximum depth of water is around here is 1 foot and breadth is not more than 10 feet. However, both the river’s depth and width increases whenever it is impeded by stop dams built to regulate the flow.
Actually the cost is around Rs. 2179 crores. But I kind of agree with your point. The veins coagulated with domestic and industrial waste and oxygen levels depleted by large amounts of rubbish a departure from the intensive care unit appears unlikely anytime soon.
Yes I agree with you. Can you believe that over Rs 2000 crores has been allotted to this project! They could have spent that much money on other imp things in the city.
