Q: Im just starting out on my first job and fr that I have to live in Podanur so that I can be closer to my workplace. Can you guys give me a brief idea about this place in general?
There are enough general stores, grocery shops and supermarkets around the place, so all your daily household needs will be easily met. A handful of nice restaurants and cafes are also here, like Red Chillies restaurant, MSR Biriyani hotel, Yaas restaurant, and Limra fast food centre.
I recommend this place, I think its highly residential as it has all these colonies here, like Kovai Mahalingapuram, LIC Colony, Anbu Nagar, Cheran Nagar, Easwar Colony, Samanna Nagar, Mettur etc. There is even a railway colony present here, comprising of 20 blocks.
Podanur's social infrastructure is present and quite functional. There are enough schools here, like the Elgi Matriculation Higher Secondary school, NRT school, Nirmala Matha Convent Metric school, and VSSM high school. Hospitals and clinics like Railway hospital, Reshmika hospital, GD hospital, Shree Abirami hospital, and Shree Balaji hospital are also present in and around Podanur.
Oh and not just the Podanur main road, this place is also well connected via the NH47 that passes through here. That stretch is also referred to as the Salem- Kochi- Kanyakumari highway. In fact even the NH 209 runs by pretty close to Podanur.
I think the English chose Podanur for its cool climate and pleasant weather throughout the year. Even now, the climate here is cooler than the central parts of Coimbatore. Its also nearby to all those major localities of Kurichi, Vellalore, Chettipalayam and Sundarapuram, which is why I think this place has done so well real estate-wise
I must say that the station has lost all its importance after all the major railway stations were built at Coimbatore and Palakkad. But yeah it's still a significant junction and a few trains that do not go to main city railway station stop at Podanur. It is located 10 Kilometers from Coimbatore Junction.
I think the locality is extremely well connected also. I mean look at the Podanur Road, it passes through the heart of the locality. So its fairly easy to access it from any part of the locality. Its basically the SH 162, and it can lead you towards the city as well as away from it.
I know that this locality actually dates back a long time, to the colonial days. In fact the railway station here, the Podunur railway station was built then, and served as a major transit point around a hundred years back
The station was a major hub during the British era and is functional since 1862. All the trains passed by here during that time. The locality's growth was also almost entirely dependent on Railways. The Anglo-Indian communities here also flourished during the British Rule, which is why you'll see a lot of them still living here.
