Q: Can someone give me information on the Indore Development Authority's project on building more number of low cost houses? Won't it boost real estate value in the city?
Even builders are getting very annoyed with these schemes. They feel that is their services need to be rendered towards the poor for free then why can't other sectors apart from real estate also do just that? For example why can't a hotel owner give free food to the poor? Based on this thought process, the government was willing to make funds available to these private builders on cheaper terms and many incentives have also been provided to them. I really doubt that the increase in low cost houses will have a direct effect on real estate in the city. I don't even think enough low income groups will invest these houses because they are used to very bad civic facilities always. And they probably feel that they won't really stand to gain from this anyway..
Is this similar to the slum clearing project of Indore that took place in October last year? The IDA had plans of clearing slums by offering affordable housing to the slum dwellers. The project is said to have involved Community Based Participation where the slum dwellers are directly involved in this project. But according to them, IDA never took a survey nor were they asked to sign anything. And what is even funnier is that the Indore Municipal Corporation claims to have spent 90 odd lakhs in creating awareness and 20 something crores for preparing Indore for this 'slum clearance' project. Now that they haven't seem to have done much, an NGO has filed a petition against this project as they are unsure where exactly the funds were spent. Chaos! >:)
Hello :) The first set of flats that were constructed for the lower income groups under scheme 94 have still not even been occupied. Apparently these flats weren't too great and was of very poor quality. People found them too expensive and only 25 forms have been submitted for renting houses out of the available 146. The builders are getting no takers. That's why this new plan is said to do better because they're trying to make the flats in such a way that it is perfect for low cost living without having to compromise on quality. If this is a success then this plan will help to house many people in Indore! :)
Yes the Indore Development Authority is striving to find housing for all by the year 2022! As of now, Indore has a number of infrastructural projects in the city that are supposed to make the city more developed. But the slow pace of these projects and the lack of priority paid to conservation practices is really taking a tolld on the city as well as its residents. I don't know how successful this affordable housing scheme is going to be but all I know is Indore has low demand for low cost houses. There are already so many that haven't even been occupied. And now, IDA has promised the construction of 30,000 houses in the next 5 years without even having the land for it in the first place! It's very strange.
