Q: How is the rail and road connectivity situation in Indore with other parts of MP and the country? I want to know how the export industry is doing here.
Since MP is completely land-locked, this kind of trouble is anticipated actually. Currently the only way to export goods from within areas in and around Indore are by trucks. Yes, these industries are all using trucks to deliver their goods till Ratlam. From here it is carried forward by goods trains. The problem is that these goods trains run only on alternate days, so the time frame for each stage of delivery needs to be calculated properly. The goods trains finally takes all the consignment to the Mumbai port. It takes a total of 15 to 22 days, which is totally not helpful for industrial growth.
I think the things will look up for industries in and around Indore when the Indore – Dahod and the Indore – Khandwa broad gauge lines are laid. We can only hope for direct rail connectivity after that has happened and not before, so god knows how much longer we will havbe to wait. This is affecting the market harshly also. Since they are unable to export their goods abroad, they are trying to compensate for that by increasing the costs of the goods, which is again detrimental for the industry.
I agree with you. Especially in the case of perishable products like farm produce, these items need to be shipped immediately. They don’t have much of a freshness bracket, and once you cross that time frame, they are just spoilt goods. One of the major things that Indore needs right away is direct rail connectivity with some important ports of the country to help boost its slow industrial sector. For example there are a number of soya industries within Indore, that are being unable to export their products overseas, because of this delay caused by the absence of a direct route.
At the moment i’m sorry to say that the trail connectivity of Indore with other parts of the state is not good. I’m not sure exactly how it is with the rest of the country, but I’m guessing that it cant be too good, if it is bad within the state only. The problem that arises from this lack of connectivity, is that several industries based in Indore are unable to export their products to the major parts of the country, which is leading to some major problems in the industrial sectors.
