Q: Hey I'm moving to Thrikkakkara next month and was wondering what is being done about the waste problem in this area? Is there a project being undertaken by the Thrikkakkara municipality to clean up this locality?
Hey this project will seriously bring a lot of relief to the residents of the area as they don't have to be around huge amounts of plastic waste. Also poor animals like cows aren't going to choke on plastic and die a horrible death because that has also been known to happen in the past. The Urban Affairs Minister is proud of this project and he's even thinking about setting up a scientific abbatoir in the area. He's hoping he gets the funds for this futuristic advanced project and hopes that more people take this initative and support projects like this.
The municipality is also charging the residents 100 bucks per month for the disposal of waste and for shops they're charging 2.50 per kg. This is a really good system of waste disposal as the authorities also plan on monitoring the public to make sure they don't keep littering. Surveillance cameras are to be places in important places like Info park. A huge penalty will be the fine if any company is caught polluting. Interesting enough this is one of the last projects under the JNNURM scheme. It should be a huge success and drive the problem of waste disposal far away from the streets of Kochi.
Yeah and the chairman of Thrikkakara municipality has also stated that they've already bought 40,000 waste bins, 2 trucks and 15 pick up autorickshaws under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission scheme. he's pretty confident about the fact that once this project is underway, garbade disposal problems would be a thing of the past. The total cost of this project is 1 crore. The municipality already has 40 workers for waste disposal but the corporation didn't have enough vehicles for garbade transport. They've decided to start off work with the resources they have now, and increase the number of labourers as and when required. Bio waste will be treated at Brahmapuram waste treatment pland the plastic waste is to be shredded by the unit created by the municipality themselves.
Thrikkakara is a rapidly growing locality having Infopark, special economic zone, various central government offices and the Ernakulam district collectorate. These commercial spaces are bound to generate large amounts of waste and so far the municipality has not known what to do with the situation. But now, they have launched a project which wll enable Thrikkakara to get a 'clean municipality' status. The project is said to collect waste from 20,000 households, commercial establishments and offices and 2 bins ; one for plastic and one for bio waste will be provided. This is a really big deal for Kochi and it's great that they are practicing this sytem. This will also educate the peple about the importance of segregating waste.
