Water crisis in Kochi

I think that there is no water in Mattancherry also. I am from Nasreth in Mattancherry. For cooking purposes and all, I take water from a public tap because there is no pipe connection to the house. There has not been supply for the past 4-5 days, and many people borrow water from neighbouring houses to cook food.
Ashwini Eradi

yeah that is true no...Even if there is not water, there the authorities are charging taxes and there is no reduction in bills whatsoever. I think those who are planning to invest in this area of Kochi should be worried or take particular care of the issues of water scarcity.

I am a resident of Pandikkudy in West Kochi. I can say that it has been five days since he got water. He says, even if they stay awake till 1am, they do not get potable water, and there is no solution even if they complain to the water authority’s office in Karuvelippady because the officials plead helplessness.

Though the water authority takes a tough stand while levying tariff, it is not serious in supplying water. Supplying water to the city in tankers has become a big business. The common people can only shout in front of the water authority.

Yeah that is true..The 10 million litres of water that used to be pumped to places such as Chellanam, Kumbalangy, Maradu and Kumbalam is not supplied now. Still, data show that there is a shortage of 50 million litres every day.

There is a serious issue of stealing water also. Data show that 170 million to 200 million litres of water is pumped into the city every day from the purification plant in Aluva. But water authority officials in the city insist that they get only up to 140 million litres. The rest is lost or stolen.

You know one thing? Water is pumped from Periyar in Aluva. It has been a year since the trial of the JNNURM project to pump water from Muvattupuzha River, without relying on Periyar, has started. Till now, the project has not been commissioned.

What's the point in protesting like this. Only when they get burdened with pumping water, do people from the heart of the city march to the water authority’s office in protest. But how can the authority's officials supply water to so many people?
Simon Benedict

When I enquired about this issue to the authorities, I came to know that the water authority supplies only very little water to apartments. Without tankers, there will be no water for them. Because of water scarcity, even homes are supplied by tankers.
 Allen George

I think that the water that is pumped is actually used by the residents mostly only for domestic purposes like drinking, bathing, and washing. The water is pumped from Aluva and is stored in tanks in Perumanoor, Thammanam and Elamkulam.

But if you take the case of West Kochi, even today, the situation has not changed. It is still reeling under water scarcity. The new development is that most of the protests are taking place in the heart of the city.
Amal Anthony

I think that only Elamkunnapuzha panchayat is experiencing serious shortage of water. The days when the people of Vypin gave up their jobs to wait for water tankers are over. You are right. The people of vypin dont have to worry about this anymore.
Rajneesh Nambeesan

You see, at the beginning of summer, there are cries everywhere of water shortage. At the same time, there is good news that Vypin, which used to wilt because of water scarcity, has escaped that situation this time.

I think that the city requires 200 million litres of water every day. But only 170 million litres are pumped daily and only 140 million litres are available for distribution. This is the normal amount of water that is needed. I dont think that the authorities have done anything yet.
Sathish Menon

Exactly, the authorities are mere onlookers, you know. Now the people have publicly started protesting against such things. s signs of protest against water shortage begin to come up all over the place in the blistering summer, water authority officials are treading a tightrope, unable to balance supply and the demand.
Micheal George

Hey, yeah..that is true. There is an acute shortage of water in Kochi. The daily shortage is around 60 million litre of water. That is a lot lesser than what is needed in my opinion, no?
Rajeev Narayanan

Oh is it? How much litre of water does the corporation need every day? Is there any way to address this shortage of water>?
